Allow's merely presume, for now, that I don't take to explain WHY I want this. But...
I want a storage silo that works contrary of gravity. Items enter at the lesser and percolate up to the meridian chest and fill it. When the meridian chest is full, the one beneath starts to fill up upward. If somebody removes items from the acme breast, items from below bubble upward to keep the peak breast filled.
Can it exist done? Tin it be done in a respectable footprint?

Q. can it exist done? A. yes, with enough hoppers and droppers and redstone

Expanding on FirEmerald's model of concision:
Assuming you don't want to get into command blocks:
One would need to monitor the fullness of the ouput chest (peak breast) via a comparator output. [This would require at least one of the orthogonal neighbors of the chest (4 for ane/2 chest 6 for a full chest) to exist either the comparator or a solid cake; the only alternative I can see would be to continuously effort to push items from a dropper below the chest which would "squirt out" the sides when the chest was full.]
That comparator output would activate a dropper pipe to push items into the chest until the chest was full – either upward or from a side infinite not occupied by the comparator. [In club to avoid losing items from overfilling, the speed of the clock powering the dropper would need to be low.]
The input for the dropper pipe would most conveniently be a hopper line fed by a conventional top downward silo.
[Stacking several chests each fed from below would not be possible at all as removing items from a chest would crave a hopper below the chest.]

DO NOT PM me, I am currently locked out of the PM system.

Warning: I have an extemely "grindy" playstyle; YMMV — if this doesn't seem fun to yous, mine what you can from it & bin the residuum.

I realize I'one thousand a few years tardily to this, but I was actually looking to do this type of storage arrangement myself and came across this thread while doing some research...
Afterward messing around with information technology for a bit, I came upwardly with something (not sure how much would change for this, just I am on Bedrock) that watches a hopper to continue a superlative chest full using a dropper elevator, and then I added a breast underneath the meridian chest as an input/refill. Using vii chests, hoppers, and droppers per chute, allows me to store 476 stacks in a tileable and extendable footprint of 3 wide, 6 deep and viii loftier. In the testing that I've done, nothing seems to become lost, though there are some sticking points in the hoppers as items movement through (but you can affluent them through by bypassing the comparator sensor).
I'1000 pretty new to Minecraft and definitely non a pro at the redstone, but for the about role it's pretty simple to build and empathize I think. I haven't looked into building a silo or an automatic sorter yet, so I don't know how the footprint compares, only since nigh of it is out of sight and out of heed because you'll merely see two chests, I feel like information technology volition piece of work for how I desire to ready a silo. At that place'due south also room to add a sorter on tiptop I believe, though I acknowledge I'll need to do some homework on the best way to implement information technology.
I appreciate finding your question and answers, it was the beginning redstone project I designed myself that (seemingly) works. Though, we'll encounter almost lag when I get a dozen of them built....

Welcome!
Lag should be fine. Chests do crusade a flake of customer side lag considering they're considered entities, but the boosted redstone will simply actuate if items are transported.
Personally I built a silo only once (along with a huge automatic sorter) and and so never again. If I really need big quantities of items then I'll use shulker boxes, and a shulker box sorter if necessary. We spend a lot of fourth dimension in our storage systems and I adopt to have all items in close proximity instead of walking forever through corridors, passing chests that mostly incorporate nothing or a couple of stacks of items So the centerpiece of my storage is the good erstwhile multi detail sorter from gnembon (which is slower merely easier to build than rapscallions variant), along with a bulk storage for only 20-thirty different items that is hooked upwardly to a traditional sorter.

Thank you!
That was what I was thinking, however given that I am getting lag using an efficiency 5 pickaxe with haste two...I think that I am going to be careful just the same.
My thought was more forth the lines of existence able to accept a "silo chute" for big quantity items like say stone or dirt and so that I can store plenty to not worry about running out if I want to build something new. I made a version of ShulkerCraft'due south storage room considering I liked the layout and relative firmness. My thought was to turn one of the 3 sections into a majority silo setup where I would nonetheless take easy access to a chest to pull from and one to refill the chute, but all of the remainder of the chests would be subconscious below and out of the way.
Although, my thoughts may change in one case I become some shulkers...I found the end portal but haven't gone through yet
